Have a Harvest Festival
Gather some samples of traditional Native American foodstuffs. These
may include bean varieties, berries, chocolate, corn, cocoa, squash,
garden peppers, gourds, simple candy and maple syrup, onions,
peanuts, popcorn, potato varieties, tomatoes, and tapioca. Have
samples of some of the foods available. Try pouring and then tasting
small amounts of maple syrup over popcorn.
Make Cornhusk Mask.
Use markers to decorate an oval shaped posterboard. Decorate with
cornhusk (great hair).

Paw Prints
Make stamps out of erasers, sponges, or with the child's fist.
Dog Puppets
Provide socks, paper bags, and /or paper plates to make dog puppets.
Bone Printing
Provide different meat bones, a tray of tempera paint, and paper to
make prints.
Bone Painting
Cut easel paper in bone shapes.
Dog Collages
Have children find dog pictures in magazines. Have the children cut
out the dog pictures and glue onto construction paper to create dog collages.
Centers
Pet Store
Using stuffed animals simulate a pet store. Include a counter
complete with cash register and money. Post a large sign that says,
"Pet Store." Set out many stuffed dogs with collars and
leashes. Children will enjoy pretending they have a new pet.
Dog Grooming
Provide the children with empty shampoo and conditioner bottles,
brushes, combs, ribbons, collars, plastic bathtub, towels, and
stuffed animal dogs.
Veterinarian's Office
Use some medical equipment and stuffed dogs to create a
veterinarian's office.
Games
Doggie, Doggie, Where's Your Bone?
Bring in a clean bone or a bone cut from construction paper. Sit the
children in a circle. Choose one child to be the dog. Have the child
pretending to be the dog sit in the middle. The doggie closes his
eyes. A child from the circle sneaks up and takes the bone. Children
call, "Doggie, doggie, where's your bone? Someone stole it from
your home!" The "dog" gets three guesses to find out
who has the bone.

Have children imagine they are inventing a new
candy bar. Make up a name for it and draw
it.

Make S'mores
Top 1 graham square with chocolate bar piece and marshmallow.
Microwave at HIGH (100% power) for 10 to 15 seconds or until
marshmallow puffs. Top with another graham, pressing slightly.

First Day of Fall
Autumn Trees
Need: construction paper, glue sticks, leaves
Have each child place their hand and forearm on the construction
paper and trace the outside of the arm and forearm all the way up to
the elbow. Make sure their fingers are spread apart. The forearm will
be the tree trunk and the fingers will be the branches.
Color with brown crayons. Using strap paper cut out small triangles
or leaf shapes, and glue them all over your tree's branches to be the
leaves (could take a walking field trip to gather leaves to use).
Make sure to use fall colors of red, orange, yellow, and brown. Contributed by: Dawn
Fall Faces
Draw a face in the center of a large white paper. Do leaf rubbings
(fresh leaves work best) around the face to frame it. Cut out and
put on dark construction paper. Good idea for a fall bulletin board. Contributed by: Betty Clay
