The Owl

There's a wide-eyed owl
(thumbs and forefingers around eyes)
With a pointed nose,
(thumbs and forefingers to make a point)
He has pointed ears
(clenched hands, forefingers up for ears)
And claws for toes:
(make hands into claws)
He sits in a tree
And looks at you;
(fingers circles around eyes)
Then flaps his wings and says,
(hands to chest and flap elbows)
"tu-whit, tu-whoo "
(hands cup mouth to hoot)

Five Little Owls

5 little owls,
On a branch by the shore,
1 fell off,
Then there were 4.

4 little owls,
High in a tree,
The wind blew hard,
Then there were 3.

3 little owls,
None of them knew,
A raven took one,
Then there were 2.

2 little owls,
Sitting in the sun,
A raccoon came along,
Then there was 1.

1 little owl,
In the setting sun,
Flew off to the forest,
Then there were none.

Ten Hungry Owls

Ten hungry owlets sat in a tree.
The first one said, "Where's our mommy?
The second one said, "I want to eat."
The third one said, "I'd like some meat."
The fourth one said, "I need something for my tummy."
The fifth one said, "I hope it's something yummy."
The sixth one said, "Where, oh, where can our mom be?"
The seventh one said, "She's on a hunting spree."
The eighth one said, "I wish we could fly."
The ninth one said, "Let's give it a try."
The tenth one said, "Fly! Fly! We can fly!"

Mother Owl came back and said,
"You all need some rest."
Ten tired owlets flew back to their nest.

Book Review

Owl Sees Owl
by Laura Godwin and Rob Dunlavey

A wide awake baby owl hops out of a tree nest embarking on a solo journey, exploring the starry world. The baby owl's journey is told in a poem composed of four-word stanzas. With a "Jump, Flutter, Flap, Fly," the baby owl flies above the fall woods. When looking into the water the baby owl spies its reflection, "Owl/Sees Owl," causing the young owl to fly back home. The simple words used in the poem are repeated in reverse order as the baby owl flies home. A beautiful illustrated story with simple text that forms a poem that tells of a baby owl's solo journey and its return back home.

Story

Owl Babies by Martin Waddell

The bay owls came out of their house, and they sat on the tree and waited. A big branch for Sarah, a small branch for Percy, and an old piece of ivy for Bill

When three baby owls awake one night to find their mother gone, they can't help but wonder where she is. Stunning illustrations from unique and striking perspectives capture the owls as they worry about their mother: What is she doing? When will she be back? What scary things move all around them?
