Ancient Cities

London is made up of two ancient cities, the City of London and the City of Westminster.

The City of London is the oldest part of London. It was originally a Roman settlement (Londinium), established around 50AD. The City of London is the business and financial center of the United Kingdom. It is known as 'the City' and the Square Mile (1 sq mi/2.59 sq km).

The City of Westminster in London is where Parliament and most of the government offices are located. Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of the Queen, is located in the City of Westminster.

Greater London

London is made up of 32 boroughs together with the City of London. The 'City of London' and the 32 boroughs together are known as Greater London.

Buckingham Palace the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837. Changing of the Guard is a ceremony that lasts 40 minutes when the soldiers who have been mounting guard at the palace go off duty and are replaced by the new guard.

Kensington Palace once the home of Britain's kings and queens and the setting for many great events in royal history. Parts of the palace remain a private residence for members of the Royal Family.

London Bridge

Through the centurys, London Bridge has fallen into disrepair, been destroyed many times and damaged. The medievil London Bridge contained shops and houses. The buildings on London Bridge were a major fire hazard. In 1831, a new London Bridge designed by John Rennie was opened. Rennie's bridge was wide and constructed of granite.

In 1967, when London Bridge needed to be replaced it was sold to an America, Robert McCulloch. The bridge was numbered as it was taken apart and shipped to America. It was reconstructed at Lake Havasu City in Arizona. The current London Bridge was designed by architect Lord Holford and opened in 1973.

London Bridge does not have towers. Tower Bridge has towers and is the most recognizable bridge on the River Thames. It is often mistakenly referred to as “London Bridge”.

Cathedrals

St Paul's Cathedral, designed by Sir Christopher Wren, is one of the great buildings in the world. It was commenced in 1675 to replace an earler St Paul's that had been destroyed in the great fire of London in 1666. Its 360 foot dome is the second largest in the world (the largest is St. Peter's Basilica in Rome).

Westminster Cathedral is London's leading Roman Catholic place of worship and was designed by the architect John Francis Bentley. It was built between 1895 and 1903, and consecrated in 1910.

Westminster Abbey is an Anglican Church and the site of the coronation for the English monarchy.
